you’re not alone

Today’s teens face different risks

Vaping, cannabis edibles, pills bought online and heavy weekend drinking are far more common than many parents realize, and today’s products can be much stronger than what adults remember. I have spoken about these trends among North Texas youth on CBS North Texas, and I see their effects in my office.

Young people often do not see their use as a problem, and they usually do not want to hear it from a parent. Working with an outside counselor who has been through recovery herself can make it easier for them to open up.

Signs a teen or young adult may need help

  • Sudden changes in friends, grades, sleep or mood
  • Missing money, alcohol or medication at home
  • Vape products, pills or edibles you did not know about
  • Trouble at school, work or with the law
  • Pulling away from family and old interests

For parents who want to learn more about teen substance use, see the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

how it works

How I work with young people and parents

One-on-one counseling

Private sessions where your teen or young adult can talk openly about what they are using and why, without feeling lectured.

Support for parents

I help parents understand what is going on, respond calmly and set clear, consistent expectations at home.

Daily support

Like all my clients, young people get daily support between sessions, which helps when peer pressure and stress show up in real time.

what to expect

Why early help matters for young people

The teen and young adult brain is still developing, which makes it more sensitive to alcohol and drugs and more likely to form habits quickly. Getting help early, before use becomes deeply rooted, can change the course of a young person’s life.

We also look at what is driving the use. For many young people it is anxiety, social pressure, boredom or difficult feelings they do not know how to handle. Learning healthier ways to cope is just as important as cutting back or stopping.

Parents play a big role. Calm, consistent responses at home, clear expectations and staying connected even when it is hard all make a real difference.

Young adults in their twenties face their own pressures, from college and first jobs to living on their own for the first time. Drinking and drug use can quickly become a way to cope. I help young adults sort out what they want for their lives and how substances are getting in the way.

A counselor who’s been there

I’m Jennifer Sartin, MS, a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (Texas LCDC #11510) with 17 years of experience. Before I became a counselor, I struggled with alcohol and drugs myself, so I understand this from the inside.

My practice focuses only on addiction. Every client gets a weekly session plus daily support between sessions, because recovery happens in everyday life, not just in my office.

What ages do you work with?

I work with teens and young adults, and with their parents. Call me to talk about your situation and whether my approach is a good fit.

Will you tell me what my teen says in sessions?

Trust is important for counseling to work. We talk about confidentiality together at the start, including the safety situations where I would always involve parents.

Can I get help as a parent even if my teen refuses?

Yes. Parent support alone can make a real difference in how things go at home. See my family support page.

How soon can we start?

My teen says everyone does it. How do I respond?

That is a very common response. We can work on how to stay calm, avoid power struggles and still hold clear expectations.

Do you work with college students home for the summer or online?

Yes. Online sessions anywhere in Texas make it easier to stay consistent, whether they are at home or away at school in the state.

If you’re in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.
