A clear path through the woods representing helping a loved one take the first step
you’re not alone

When you know something has to change

Maybe you have tried to talk to them before and it turned into an argument. Maybe you are afraid of saying the wrong thing, or of losing them altogether. Most families wait a long time before reaching out, usually because they do not know how to start.

An intervention does not have to be a dramatic, surprise confrontation. Often the most effective approach is a calm, well-planned conversation from people who love them, with a clear next step ready to go.

You may also be carrying the fear that if you say something, you will make it worse. That fear is understandable, and it keeps many families silent for years. With preparation, though, most families find they can say what needs to be said in a way that is loving, clear and much more likely to be heard.

Intervention help may be right if

  • Your loved one denies there is a problem
  • Past conversations have ended in anger or promises that did not last
  • Their drinking or drug use is putting their health, job or safety at risk
  • Family members disagree about what to do
  • You want to be ready with a plan if they say yes

If you need help finding treatment options for a loved one, you can also contact SAMHSA’s National Helpline.

how it works

How I help families prepare

Understand the situation

We start by talking through what is happening, your loved one’s history and what has or has not worked before.

Plan the conversation

I help you decide who should be involved, what to say, what to avoid and how to stay calm and caring even if it gets emotional.

Have a next step ready

We line up the right next step in advance, whether that is counseling with me, medical care or a treatment program, so your loved one can say yes right away.

what to expect

What makes a conversation more likely to work

Loved ones are more likely to listen when they feel cared for rather than attacked. That means speaking from love and specific examples, not labels or blame, and choosing a time when they are sober and calm.

It also helps when everyone involved is on the same page. Mixed messages, such as one person setting a boundary while another quietly rescues, make change much harder. We work through those differences before the conversation happens.

Finally, have a clear, specific offer ready, such as a first appointment that day. When someone says yes, the next step should be easy to take right away.

We will also talk about you. Watching someone you love struggle with addiction takes a real toll, and preparing for this conversation can stir up a lot of emotion. Getting support for yourself will help you stay calm and steady, no matter how your loved one responds.

common questions

Addiction Intervention Help FAQs

What if my loved one says no?

That can happen, and it is not the end. We plan for that possibility too, including the boundaries you will keep and how to leave the door open.

Do you lead the intervention yourself?

We decide together what makes sense for your family. My focus is preparing you and helping you choose the right next step for your loved one.

What if they need detox or medical care?

I’m not a medical doctor and don’t provide detox. If your loved one needs medical care, we plan for that as part of the next step.

How do we start?

Who should be part of the conversation?

Usually a small group of people your loved one trusts and respects. We decide together who will help and who might make things harder.

Can you help if my loved one lives somewhere else in Texas?

Yes. I can meet with your family online, and your loved one can start online counseling with me anywhere in Texas.
